Issue: Funding for the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs

School meals have not been adequately funded in 2 decades. However, we have been required to make significant nutritional improvements in our school meal programs that have added costs (removing low nutrition items (sodas), reducing or eliminating added sugar items (donuts), reducing saturated fats, increasing fresh fruits\veggies, etc.) These are terrific changes for our children; however, bringing school meal service into a 21st century model will require substantial increases in funding. Many schools in our County are operating at or near losses. New proposals will add additional nutrition requirements which will undoubtedly add costs once again.

Unless we see increased financial support for school meals, districts will be stretched further as they strive to serve the 4,000,000 meals daily to California's children, of all incomes, whom rely on our programs for daily nutrition. We serve approximately in 15,000 daily meals in Marin County.

I am asking each of you to please FAX letters supporting FULL FUNDING for school meals to the Senate and Assembly Committee legislative Chairs. I would also encourage you to send a copy to our District 3 Senator: Carole Migden, and Assembly Member District 6: Jared Huffman. (See legislator names & fax # below).
